PROJECT GUIDELINES
Project work is one of the
essential components of the Social Studies curriculum. Students can greatly benefit if
project work is carried out in the manner intended.
BENEFITS OF PROJECT WORK
The benefits of project work are many. Pupils learn to observe
and source for relevant materials and data. After collecting
the whole mass of information they will learn to separate the relevant from those which
are not. After having obtained the required facts, the students will learn to organise them so that they will be able to present
the facts systematically.
PROCESS OF PROJECT WORK
In the process of doing project work, students will have gained much knowledge,
acquired skills and developed values
for themselves. They will have learnt to communicate with one
another and with others. They will have learnt independence
as well as teamwork. In the course of the project, students
will also understand the process involved and not just be
concerned with the end product. Processes like undertaking research, data gathering, making use
of current and prior knowledge, investigation, exploring alternatives, decision making, group interaction, problem solving and reflection provide
students with opportunities to develop thinking, IT and social skills which are essential
in the economy of the future. Finally, they will develop self-confidence,
a quality which stems from having completed an assignment, a job well done.
ATTITUDES TOWARDS PROJECT WORK
In spite of the many benefits of project work, there are those who choose to neglect or
put little effort in this component in schools because project work is considered to be
unimportant or time-consuming. In reality, project work need not take up a lot of time if
the teacher can organise it well and is clear as to what is expected of the students.
Students must, of course, know what they have to do and how they should go about doing it.
Teachers need to emphasise the process of doing project work and provide students with the
knowledge and skills needed to perform, reflect upon and evaluate their work. With proper guidance, students should value project work as meaningful and of
worth.
THE TEACHERS' ROLE IN PROJECT WORK
1. The teacher should brief students.
explain clearly what is expected of students
describe the three types of project work that students should attempt, namely :
- 3-D models / charts / scrapbooks / booklet reports
explain the assessment criteria for grading project work
set a deadline for the
submission of the project proposals which should include
details and a brief outline of the project
2. The teacher should work out a time frame with the students regarding :
the schedule for the steps of the process
the deadline for the submission of the final product
the date for the oral presentations by students
the date for the exhibition of the project
3. The teacher should monitor the progress of the project periodically to ensure that :
the facts presented are accurate
the students are keeping to
their work schedule
the students are evaluating their own progress
the students are cooperating together as a team
the language
used is appropriate and grammatically correct
